Popa Chubby fait face à la salle comble de L’Olympia. Le lieu où Hendrix, Miles, les Beatles et tant d’autres monstres sacrés ont joué. Et il dit au public : « Je t’aime mes amis ! » Et à ce moment précis, c’est comme si la pandémie n’avait jamais existé !
Popa n’a jamais cessé de travailler. Suite à la parution début 2020 de « It’s A Mighty Hard Road » qui célébrait ses 30 ans de carrière, il a sorti « Tinfoil Hat », un projet qui rendait compte de la période de confinement passée chez lui. L’année qui suivit fut marquée par des moments et des thèmes plus énergiques. Ce que l’on retrouve de façon très prégnante sur « Emotional Gangster », son dernier album à paraître dans le monde entier le 18 mars 2022 sur le label Dixiefrog.
Et effectivement, les émotions sont fortes sur cet album de 11 morceaux où le Chubbfatha a joué de la plupart des instruments tout en enregistrant et mixant le projet. « Cet album est le reflet de moments plus joyeux et d’une bonne grosse dose de Classic Blues » s’exclame Popa depuis son studio plein de guitares de la Hudson Valley. « Et j’ai pris bien soin de rajouter des reprises de « Hoochie Coochie Man » et « Dust My Broom » pour montrer le respect que j’ai pour les Pères Fondateurs du genre. Vous savez, Willie Dixon a toujours été une de mes idoles ! ».
Mais les vraies perles sont ici les compositions originales de Popa Chubby. « Equal Opportunity » est une rengaine au refrain addictif qui célèbre le genre féminin à un moment où il en a sérieusement besoin. Tandis que des titres comme « Fly Away » ou les versions françaises et anglaises de « Why You Wanna Make War ? » sont des tubes en puissance !
Les amateurs de guitare et de slide seront largement servis sur cet album à l’image de « Tonight I’m Gonna Be The Man » qui rajoute une saveur particulière à l’ensemble !

Sans oublier la présence remarquée et remarquable à l’harmonica du magicien Jason Ricci sur le futur hymne Blues-Rock « New Way Of Walking » ou sur le shuffle plein de swing de « Best For Last ».

En plus de 30 ans de carrière, Popa a beaucoup donné de sa personne. Il fuit les honneurs et ne court pas après les récompenses car seule la musique lui importe vraiment. Pourtant, cela n’a pas empêché ses 3 derniers albums de figurer en bonne place dans les classements blues du Billboard. Ou bien de recevoir le prestigieux Red Rooster Award des mains de la famille de Willie Dixon et d’être nominé pour un W.C. Handy Award

Popa Chubby stands before a sold-out crowd in Paris at l’Olympia. The theatre where Hendrix, Miles, The Beatles and so many greats played. He tells the audience: “Je T’aime Mes Amis” !
“I love you my friends” and in that moment it’s like the pandemic never happened.
Popa has not stopped working. He followed the 2020 release celebrating his 30th anniversary (“It’s A Mighty Hard Road”) with an introspective outing reflecting his time at home : “ Tinfoil Hat”. The year that has followed has lead to more upbeat themes and times. This is strongly reflected on his latest recording, “Emotional Gangster”, out worldwide on Dixiefrog records on March 18th 2022.

And indeed the emotions run high on this recording. 11 tracks featuring The Chubbfatha on many instruments and doing all the mixing and recording duties. “This record definitely reflects happier times and good solid dose of classic blues!” Says Popa from his studio full of guitars in the Hudson Valley. “I specifically included covered like “Hoochie Coochie Man” and “Dust My Broom” to show respect for the Fathers. Willie Dixon has always been my idol you know”.

But the real gems here come in Popa’s original compositions. “Equal Opportunity” is a light-hearted sing along that celebrates the feminine at a time when it is seriously needed. And songs like “Fly Away” and both French and English versions of “Why You Wanna Make War?” are big standouts !

There is more than an ample amount of pure guitar bliss on this record and slide guitar on tracks like “Tonight I’m Gonna Be The Man” add flavor to a savory mix!

For an added bonus Harmonica Wizard Jason Ricci joins Popa on the Blues Rock anthem “New Way Of Walking” and the swing shuffle “Best For Last”.

Popa has been given many accolades in a 30 years career. He shuns recognition and has little use for awards as he says it just gets in the way of the music. This has not stopped his last 3 outings from reaching the Billboard Blues Charts. He has also been given the prestigious Red Rooster Award by Willie Dixon’s family and been nominated for a Grammy and a W.C. Handy Award.
